Voter ID Card - Steps To Apply

Why Do You Require a Voter ID Card ? How To Apply Online ?

General Elections plays important role in building the nation. We the citizens of India elect our leaders through voting system. You have to be very careful and judge cautiously while choosing your leader, keeping caste and religion aside. If you choose the wrong person as your leader, you will regret for the next 5 yrs years or till the next elections. Having a voter ID card brings you the eligibility to vote for your representatives in State Assembly Elections, Municipal Corporation Elections, and Panchayat Elections.

Unfortunately, most of the educated youth in India doesnt vote. They get jobs through campus placement and relocate to their job location soon after they finish their graduation. And then they will not be in position to travel hometown to vote due to lack of availability of leaves as most of their projects are critical. Hence, most of the votes are casted by uneducated/illeterate or locals who blindly vote without properly evaluating the candidate they are voting for. Infact, the voters are bribed by the local leaders, amount ranges between Rs. 100/- to Rs. 1000 or even higher along with Biryani parcels and liquor for free. Once the leaders comes to power, they resort to all ranges of scams, local settlements. There are even instances where our elected representatives show off their muscle power at the toll booths when asked by the staff to pay the toll fee. They totally feel they are above the law and order. They even utter nonsense on sensitive issues in front of media. They have election manifestos but never fulfill them. Even the voters have the tendency to ignore and get ready to get fooled again.

Its now very important for educated and working employees to take part in electing their representatives. Their participation will definitely bring change. Now coming to the actual topic, here is what you have to do to get your voter ID card.

If you are a citizen of India and of 18 yrs age, then you are eligible to vote. Voter ID card is issued by Election Commission of India and it serves as your identity proof while casting vote. Not just that, you can also use the same for your general identity proof, address proof, age proof.

If you are a native of city A, and relocated to city B due to job reasons or whatsoever reason - you may apply online to fill "Form 6" and submit. You just have to upload your recent passport photo and fill in the details asked for. You have to enter details of your current district, assembly constituency, your name, father/husband name, complete address. Now before clicking on SUBMIT, make sure you will click on TRANSLATE button to check for the details and if they are correctly spelled in Telugu.

Real Scenario:

I am a native of Visakhapatnam, but relocated to Hyderabad sometime back. I dont have a voter ID card and I decided to apply for one. Since I am currently residing in Telangana (as Hyderabad falls in Telangana region), I visit the website "http://ceotelangana.nic.in/" to fill the FORM 6 (voter ID application form). Under the tab E-Registration, choose Assembly Constitution and then click on FORM 6 (New Enrollment). That will direct you to a page where you need to give the details asked for, and upload your recent photo. Check the translation version too, before submitting. Make sure to save the Application ID number, using which you can check the status online.

To check the Voter ID application status, under E-Registration --> Assembly Constituency --> Know your Status.

It took me exact 25 days to get it approved. Once you get the approval, take a print or copy the EPIC number and visit any of the E-Seva centres. They will then issue the Voter ID SmartCard on payment of Rs. 110/- (thats what they quoted me)
