Hema Upadhyay and her lawyer Haresh Bhambani were found dead under mysterious circumstances. Their dead bodies were found dumped in stormwater opposite a crematorium in the Dahanukar wadi area of Kandivali on Dec 13, 2015. The bodies had been wrapped in transparent polyurethane sheets and stuffed in cardboard boxes. According to the police, "they did not have any clothes on except for the undergarments. Hema's hands were tied and she was probably smothered with a pillow while her lawyers face was mangled and injuries indicated a violent death from multiple blows with a blunt object. The bodies had not decomposed." The bodies have been sent for an autopsy to know the exact cause of death.


Hema Upadhyay (born Hema Hirani : 1972-2015) was an Indian Artist from Mumbai. Born and brought up in Baroda, she holds a Bachelor's Degree in Painting and Masters in Printmaking, Fine Arts from M.S University, Baroda. She is known for her work in Photography and sculptural installations. She met Chintan Upadhyay in 1992 and married to him in 1998, and since then they settled down in Mumbai. They together worked for many exhibitions before filing divorce in 2010. Chintan then moved to New Delhi while she lived in their Flat in Juhu Tara road. She filed a harassment case against Mr. Chintan in 2013 accusing him of painting obscene sketches on walls of her room in Mumbai flat.

On Dec 11 th evening, she called up her domestic help Lalit Mandal at around 6:30 pm and informed him that should would be having her dinner outside. When she didnt return home till late night, Mandal tried calling her on her phone and it was switched off. Then he tried calling all her relatives and friends to find out her whereabouts. After growing suspicious the next morning, Mandal registered a missing complaint at Santa Cruz Police Station on Dec 12th. Also Hema's lawyer Mr. Bhambhani went missing around the same time.

Mr. Bhambhani's family members say that he left his Matunga residence at around 6 pm on Dec 11, telling his family that he was going to meet a client in Andheri. They too registered a police complaint after he went missing. He made a call to his family members around 8:30 pm on Dec 11th after which his phone was off too. Based on this call, the police too traced his location to Kandivali.

The Crime branch officers have met Hema's estranged husband to record his statement. Investigation is on.
